When you drink, your liver breaks alcohol down into a toxic byproduct called acetaldehyde, which is 10-30x more toxic than alcohol itself. Your body clears it at a fixed rate - slower for those with an ALDH2 deficiency. Drink faster than that and it builds up in your system, causing symptoms like nausea, Asian flush, and "feeling like death".
